PA Vehicle Safety Inspection – 12 hrs.

Tues. / Thurs. 5:30 – 8:30

Prepare for and earn your official license to perform state-mandated vehicle safety inspections in Pennsylvania. This PennDOT-approved program is designed to give automotive technicians a thorough understanding of vehicle safety inspection regulations, defect identification, and official verification procedures.

Through focused classroom study and practical training, you will learn the legal and mechanical requirements needed to take both the official PennDOT written and hands-on examinations.

Program Requirements & Details

  • Age Requirement: Students must be at least 18 years of age to become certified.

  • Identification: You must hold and present a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.

  • Structure: The program consists of four 3-hour evening classes covering classroom instruction and theory, followed by a scheduled 1-hour practical, hands-on exam.

  • Included Materials: The baseline course fee fully covers all required textbooks, study materials, and your primary testing fees.

What You Will Learn

  • PennDOT Regulations: Navigating Chapter 175 of the PA Vehicle Code regarding official inspection station rules, tool requirements, and mechanic liabilities.

  • Category 1 Inspection (Passenger Cars & Light Trucks): Step-by-step evaluation of braking systems, suspension, steering, tires, lighting, glazing, and body components for vehicles under 10,000 lbs.

  • Documentation & Sticker Security: Properly filling out form MV-431, auditing records, and the legal protocols for handling and applying official safety stickers.

Optional Certification Add-Ons

Students looking to expand their mechanical credentials can add specialized inspection certifications during the first night of class:

  • Category 2 (Motorcycles): Inspecting motorcycles and motor-driven cycles. Requires independent self-study of the motorcycle chapter. Additional $40.00 fee.

  • Category 3 (Medium/Heavy Trucks & Buses): Inspecting commercial vehicles, trailers, and buses over 10,000 lbs. Requires independent self-study of the heavy vehicle chapter. Additional $40.00 fee.

Retest Policy: In the event that a student does not pass an examination on the first attempt, testing fees apply for remediation: a $30.00 fee for the written retest and a $40.00 fee for the hands-on practical retest.

Combining classroom theory with practical equipment demonstrations, this course prepares you to navigate the PennDOT inspection platform and pass the mandatory state certification examinations.

PennDot Mandatory Requirements

  • Age Requirement: Students must be at least 18 years of age to become certified.
  • Identification: You must bring a valid PA Photo Driver’s License to the first night of class.
  • Required for Class: Students must bring a valid credit card to class. The instructor will walk you through the official PennDOT system step-by-step, and an active card is required to process the state’s $39.99 registration fee.
